WHAT DOES HANDMADE MEAN WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR PRODUCTS?
I call my products handmade, because that is what they are- made by my hands. I do not use advanced technology like a CNC machine that does the thinking for me when it comes to making items. I like to put my heart and hand into all the effort of making each piece something unique. I use a wide range of hand and power tools. Although I don't use hand tools as much as I did in the beginning, they are still often times a part of the creating process. Through the entire process, it is my hands in control of what is produced. First, I design, cut, shave and rough sand. Then my products go through a more in-depth hand sanding process. This is where many levels of dry hand sanding take place. Following after is the wet hand sanding of many levels to complete a product until it comes to a smooth, shiny finish. All of my utensils are sealed with beeswax and food safe mineral oil as the last step.
I take pride in the fact that these products are not common type utensils, as is what's available in today's typical mass-produced industry. Instead they are made individually, with a lot of care and thought behind each piece. It is what makes Woodland Treasures so special.
HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY UTENSILS?
In order to preserve and keep your utensils and boards like new, please follow these simple guidelines:
-
Wash wooden utensils in warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry immediately. Do not leave it soaking in water as this can cause the wood to warp.
-
Never put wooden utensils in the dishwasher as this can cause cracks and breakdown the quality of the wood.
-
Once a month, use a food-grade safe oil such as mineral oil, or beeswax on your utensil as this preserves its life to keep it looking shiny and new. This will also work as a sealant against germs. Make sure utensils are completely dry before sealing as to avoid locking in moisture.
-
Wood is a natural substance and will expand and retract when exposed to elements like water and heat which can cause the grain to raise. Do not be alarmed at this as this is a normal part of the process and will get better with time, use and a little regular maintenance. When needed, simply use a brown paper bag or a very fine grain sandpaper (1000 grit or higher) and rub down the utensil until smooth again.
I love hearing feedback, thoughts, suggestions, and inquiries. Is there a question that you couldn’t find an answer to? Feel free to contact me. I'll gladly get back to you.
